What are the oldest lucky charms?

Charms are everywhere, and always have been. Did you know that as far back as 75,000 years ago, shells were used for adornment in Africa, and in ancient Egypt charms were already being used as symbols of faith, luck and protection, just like we use them. Throughout history, charms have fascinated us with their enduring allure and style as amulets, talismans, and, of course, charm bracelets. What does the word 'charm' mean?

The word “Charm” comes from the Latin word 'carmen,' meaning song or incantation, so charms have always been symbols and bridges that connects song, prayer and poetry to an object that wordlessly renders its powerful meaning. 

Their meaning protects us with deep and symbolic power. 

Why is a horseshoe lucky?

Here's a great example-- One of the most iconic symbols of good luck is the horseshoe. Folklore has it that horseshoes were considered to be lucky because they were made of iron, a material believed to ward off negative forces. Moreover, the crescent shape of the horseshoe was associated with the moon, a symbol of fertility and protection in many cultures.  One famous origin story of lucky horseshoes is that of a Saint named Dunstan and the Devil. St. Dunstan nailed a horseshoe to the Devil’s hoof which caused the dark one such pain that in pleading for its removal, he promised never to enter a place where a horseshoe was nailed above a doorway.

What is a horseshoe shackle?
